BC Ministry of Education Provincial Outreach Program for Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder

This web site provides information about the effects of FASD on student learning and behaviour. Learning modules include ‘what is FASD?’, ‘alcohol effects on the developing brain’, ‘primary disabilities’, ‘paradigm shift’, ‘secondary disabilities’, ‘environment’, ‘relationship’, ‘school experiences’, ‘cause and effect/impulsivity’, ‘memory difficulties’, ‘slow processing pace’, and ‘dysmaturity’.

FASD Connections

The FASD Connections website purpose is to assist adults and adolescents with FASD. It has areas for birth mothers, individuals with FASD and others. There are online forums, links to articles and new information on FASD. The founders of the website offer training services and can be contacted through this site.

National Organization on Fetal Alcohol Syndrome

This Washington based site has separate web pages, helpful information and links in the following categories: educators, advocacy, expectant mothers / family planning, living with FASD and health care professionals.

Canadian Centre on Substance Abuse

The CCSA mandate is to provide national leadership and evidence-informed analysis and advice to mobilize collaborative efforts to reduce alcohol and other drug related harms. This site has a wide array of FASD links and resources. It aims to provide recent, accurate information and to serve as a gateway to credible Canadian sources of information.

This site is a resource where justice system professionals and others can access information re: implications of FASD in the Justice System. It includes background information, what can be done to help, case examples, etc.

Alberta Alcohol and Drug Abuse Commission (AADAC)

This site provides information on prevention and treatment of Alcohol and Drug Abuse. It contains general information on FASD and a few resources (101 ways to have a healthy baby) focused on FASD prevention.

Research

Canada Northwest FASD Research Network

The Canada Northwest FASD Research Network (CanFASD Northwest) aims to build research capacity across Western Canada and the Territories to address high priority research questions, to devise more effective prevention and support strategies for women, for individuals with FASD and their families, and to better inform policy. This website has a searchable dabatabase for research, programs, courses and demonstration projects underway within the Canada Northwest region.

The Journal of FAS International

This site provides free access to peer reviewed FASD research published in the Journal of FAS International and reports on other significant peer reviewed papers, upcoming conferences, and events.

Education Resources Information Center

This is a search engine through which it is possible to access the largest digital library of education literature, including a number of articles on FASD.

Center for Disease Control (CDC)

National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities (NCBDDD), information on FASD, surveillance and prevention projects, research, ordering information for publications and resources, information on the National FAS Task Force which makes recommendations that contribute to a national agenda for enhancing identification, intervention, and prevention of FAS and other prenatal alcohol-related effects.

Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) Center for Excellence

Sponsored by the Center for Substance Abuse Prevention (CSAP), Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). This web site offers information to individuals, families, and communities affected by FAS in an effort to improve quality of life. Also provides links to other projects designed to improve knowledge of FASD and promote best practices.

National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Addiction (NIAAA)

A branch of the National Institutes of Health has a wide range of materials in Spanish and English on prevention for teens, college age students, links to clinical trials and other research, medical databases, training and conference schedules and other resources.

University of Washington Fetal Alcohol and Drug Unit

Site describes research projects on fetal alcohol and drug effects across the life span, has extensive information on fetal alcohol and drug effects resources and trainings, and provides consultation for persons of any age thought to be affected by prenatal exposure to alcohol.
